Bioelectrical signals are generated by nerves and muscle cells. Commonly used bioelectrical signals include electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate variability (HRV).

Electrodes transfer from the ionic conduction in the tissue to the electronic conduction which is necessary for making measurements.

Biosensors are devices that detect certain biochemical signals and convert them to electrical signals that can be measured.
