Fetal monitoring devices are used to listen to or record a fetus's heartbeat through the mother's abdomen. 
The most common type of fetal monitoring is external electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). 

Here are some types of fetal monitoring instruments:
Doppler ultrasound device:
A handheld electronic device that's often used during prenatal visits and sometimes during labor.
Fetoscope: A type of stethoscope that's the most basic type of external monitor.
Electronic fetal monitoring: A procedure that uses instruments to continuously record the fetus's heartbeat and the mother's uterine contractions during labor.
