Bricks are the basic masonry units used in construction. They are easier to construct with than stone and require less labor to lay. 
 

Here are some basic characteristics of construction bricks:
Sound and compact:
Bricks should be compact and sound, with sharp edges and no cracks or air bubbles.
Hard enough: Bricks should be hard enough that fingernails can't leave an impression when scratched on them.
Uniform texture: Bricks should have a uniform texture and pre-compactness.
Water absorption: Bricks shouldn't absorb more than 1/5 of their weight in water over 24 hours.
Strength: The normal strength of bricks in India is 7 to 10 N/mm2.
