Here are some tests for molding sand:
Moisture content test:
Put 20–50 g of sand in a pan and heat it at 105°C for 2–3 minutes. The moisture will evaporate, and you can weigh the sample and put it in a desiccator. You can also use a moisture teller machine to measure the moisture content.
Permeability test: Put a 50.8 mm diameter and 50.8 mm high test specimen in a permeability meter. Pass air through the specimen at a pressure of 10 gm/cm2 (980 Pa). Note the time it takes for 2000 cm3 of air to pass through the specimen.
Clay content test: Dry a small amount of molding sand. Separate 50 g of dry sand, add 475 cc of distilled water and 25 cc of a 3% NaOH, and stir for about 10 minutes. Fill the wash bottle with water up to the marker.
AFS or 25 Micron Clay Content test: This test determines the percentage of clay and other particles that settle at a rate of less than one inch per minute of water.
