Cancer is a disease that occurs when cells divide uncontrollably and spread into surrounding tissues. 

Cancer cells are different from normal cells because they:
Grow out of control
Ignore signals to stop dividing
Ignore signals to specialize
Ignore signals to die and be shed 

Cancer can develop in many ways, including:
DNA damage
A mutation in the DNA or any product of that DNA
Loss of function of the regulatory and repressor systems in the cycle 
Cancer can lead to phenotypic expression in many forms, from mild to life-threatening.

Cancer cell biology research seeks to define the biological basis underlying the differences between normal cells and cancerous cells. This includes studies of the fundamental mechanisms that drive pre-cancer states, oncogenic transformation, and that support tumor growth and behavior. 

The four main types of cancer are: Carcinomas, Sarcomas, Leukemias, Lymphomas.
