The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural support to cells and tissues. It also generates cell signals that affect cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and adhesion. 
ECM-cell interactions are mediated by cell surface receptors, either directly or indirectly with cooperative molecules. The ECM is also constantly remodeling, which influences cell-signaling pathways. 

ECM-cell interactions play a crucial role in:
Embryonic development
Differentiation
Tissue remodeling
Diseases like fibrosis and cancer 
Dysregulated signaling between the ECM and cells can lead to different diseases.
