Recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology is a technique that joins DNA molecules from different species. The resulting rDNA molecule is then inserted into a host organism to create new genetic combinations. These combinations can be useful in science, medicine, agriculture, and industry.

Some examples of rDNA technology include DNA cloning and reproductive cloning.

The steps involved in standard cloning protocols include:
Choosing a host organism and cloning vector
Preparing the vector DNA
Preparing the DNA to be cloned
Creating the rDNA
Introducing the rDNA into the host organism 

The process of joining a cut DNA fragment into the plasmid vector using the enzyme DNA Ligase is called ligation. The resulting DNA molecule is known as rDNA. 
Restriction enzymes are DNA-cutting enzymes that recognize a specific target sequence and cut DNA into two pieces. DNA ligase seals gaps in the DNA backbone.
