A material balance is a calculation of the quantities of materials that enter and leave a system or process. It is based on the law of conservation of mass, which states that matter is neither created nor destroyed in a process. 
In a chemical system, the mass entering the system is equal to the mass leaving the system for steady-state conditions. The principles of material balance are used to determine the input and output flows of substances to ensure conservation of mass.

The moles of an atomic species 

The principles of material balance are essential in the field of chemical engineering and catalyst activity studies. They can also be applied in the design of chemical material stirring reaction kettles.
