Questions below are based on a draft of an editorial for a local newspaper.

(1) The school board recently announced plans to amend the district’s graduation requirements. (2) This new amendment requiring students to complete 75 hours of community service before graduation. (3) This requirement would overburden an already overextended student population.     (4) The school board members forget just how busy many students are these days. (5) In addition to schoolwork, many students participate in extracurricular activities, such as sports and academic clubs, and artistic programs. (6) Other students have afterschool or weekend jobs that allow them to save money for college. (7) Older students may also have family responsibilities, such as watching younger siblings after school, that would conflict with volunteer work. (8) Asking students to commit such a large block of time to volunteering seem unfair. (9) Students are already working as hard as they can.
 (10) It’s true that many college admissions counselors look for volunteer work on a prospective student’s application. (11) This factor alone doesn’t usually affect whether or not the student is accepted. (12) In fact, volunteering could actually take time away from a student’s most important job, studying. (13) With test scores at an all-time low, we can’t ask students to give up precious studying time to volunteer.
 (14) The school board should take these issues into consideration before making their decision. (15) It seems that parents, teachers, and community members are asking more and more of young people. (16) These hardworking kids do their best to please everyone. (17) Asking them to complete 75 hours of community service before graduation won’t necessarily turn teens into wellrounded individuals. (18) It might just add to the already mounting pressure they feel to succeed
