 (1) For more than a century, the Statue of Liberty has been an enduring symbol of freedom for people around the world. (2) Although this green lady has welcomed many visitors to our shores, most people are surprised to learn that the Statue of Liberty was originally the color bronze. (3) So, what gives this statue its famous green hue? (4) The answer may surprise you.
 (5) The Statue of Liberty is made of copper, a malleable metal that has a variety of uses. (6) Copper is commonly used to make coins, pipes, wires, and even musical instruments. (7) In most cases, copper metal starts out as a bronze color. (8) However, if left exposed to the elements, copper can turn a pale green color through a process called patina. (9) Patina occurs when copper reacts with water and oxygen in the atmosphere. (10) Over time, the copper develops a thin layer of patina, which actually protects the copper underneath from environmental damage.
