DSST Principles of Public Speaking exam covers the basics such as audience analysis, purposes of speeches, structure/organization, content/supporting materials, research, language & style, delivery, communication apprehension, listening & feedback, criticism & evaluation.

The exam is in 2 parts:
Part 1 – Multiple-Choice:  Ethical, Social, and Theoretical Considerations of Public Speaking, Audience Analysis, Adaptation and Effect, Topics and Purposes of Speeches, Structure/Organization, Content, Research, Language and Style and Delivery.

Part 2 – Speech Portion: You have to record an impromptu persuasive speech that will be scored by human raters.

E.g. Free speech
2. Audience Analysis, Adaptation and Effect - 15%
Analyzing the audience before, during, and after the speech
3. Topics and Purposes of Speeches – 9%
Formulating appropriate speech topics for specific purposes
4. Structure/Organization – 17%
E.g. “the hook”, structuring introductions, bodies, and conclusions
5. Content – 17%
E.g. Recognizing/using argument, reasoning and evidence
6. Research – 11%
Using reference materials/ finding appropriate sources in speech preparation
7.Language and Style – 9%
Using language appropriate for a public speech
8. Delivery – 13%
E.g. articulation, voice, pronunciation, body language, and media
