The study of rocks is called petrology. Petrology is a branch of geology that studies the composition, structure, and origins of rocks. It also studies the processes that form and transform rocks. 

Petrology involves aspects of chemistry, mineralogy, physics, geological mapping, and sometimes biology.

Petrologic research involves:
Examining rocks in outcrops and hand samples
Examining rocks using a petrographic microscope
Sometimes geochemistry 

Petrology has three subdivisions: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary petrology. 

Rocks are classified by the process in which they were formed.

The three main categories of rocks are:
Igneous: These rocks form when magma cools as it gets closer to the Earth's surface.
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
