Differential calculus is a branch of calculus that studies the rate of change of one variable in relation to another. It is a tool for analyzing mathematical problems, such as finding solutions to equations and understanding the behavior of curves and surfaces. 
Differential calculus starts with a formula for average rate of change, which is essentially a slope calculation. Then, using limits, a formula for the instantaneous rate of change can be developed, which is called the derivative of a function. 
The derivative of a function at a given value gives the function's rate of change near that value. A derivative is used to calculate the slope of a tangent to a function's graph.
