A complex sentence is made up of one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. The clauses are connected by conjunctions and subordinators. Subordinating conjunctions are often used in academic writing to show complex connections between ideas.

Here are some examples of complex sentences:
"When everyone had boarded, the ship began its three-hour tour"
"As soon as the castaways waded ashore, the Professor began building a radio"
"Even though I hate chocolate, I'm going to eat it anyway"
"He called his mother because he missed her"
"Since you're getting paid today, let's go out for drinks!"
"The passenger stepped off the train once it had reached the station"
"I would love to travel the world after I finish with school"

Complex sentences can be used to convey complex thoughts and ideas, combine related thoughts or ideas, and establish logical connections and subordination.
