English Grammar Practice Test: Simple, Compound And Complex Sentences — Flashcards

Simple sentences: Contain a subject, a verb, and may also have an object and modifiers. Simple sentences have one independent clause. For example, "He walked quickly back to the house".
Compound sentences: Contain at least two independent clauses. These two independent clauses can be combined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction or with a semicolon. Compound sentences have more than one verb and contain two or more clauses. For example, "TIm realized he had forgotten his wallet, so he walked quickly back to the house".
Complex sentences: Contain at least one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. Complex sentences contain an independent clause and two or more dependent clauses. For example, "He studied hard because he wanted to go to medical school as he suffered from arthritis".
