Strength of materials, also known as mechanics of materials, is the study of how materials resist applied loads without failure or plastic deformation. It's an engineering discipline that focuses on a material's ability to resist mechanical forces.

Strength of materials parameters include: Material strength, Yield strength, Compressive strength, Tensile strength.
A material's strength in a given application depends on many factors, including its resistance to deformation and cracking. It often depends on the shape of the member being designed.
Strength can be classified according to different forms of external force, including: Compressive strength, Tensile strength, Bending strength, Shearing strength, Rupture strength, Peeling strength, Shock strength, Wearing resistance.
