Fluid Mechanics Practice Test: Non Uniform Flow in Channels — Flashcards

Non Uniform Flow in Channels topics include: Gradually varied flow, gradually varied flow in wide rectangular channels, surface profiles characteristics, relation b/w water surface and channel bottom slopes, hydraulic jump, hydraulic jump types and location.

Non-uniform flow in channels occurs when the velocity is not constant at a given instant. It can also be defined as when the flow depth changes at every cross-section along the flow direction for a given time.

Non-uniform flow can result from gradual or sudden changes in the cross sectional area. For example, in a river, water flowing along the channel walls moves slower due to friction than water located in the center of the channel.
Steady flow in a channel can be either uniform or non-uniform. Uniform flow occurs when the average velocities in successive cross sections of a channel are the same. This occurs only when the cross section is constant.
