Glass packaging is made from a combination of materials, including:
Glass container:
Made from silica glass
Closure: Made from glass, metal, cork, or plastic
Additives: Enhance the stability of the mixture

Glass packaging is made from natural and sustainable materials, including:
Sand
Soda ash
Limestone
Recycled glass content, also known as cullet

These materials are melted down in furnaces to create new glass containers. Glass containers are reusable and infinitely recyclable.
The most common fining agents for glass are sulfates in combination with carbon. Of the sulfates used, sodium sulfate, or salt cake, is the most common.

Glass packaging should have a smooth surface without cracks, pinholes, and sharp edges.
Glass packaging is a combination of different materials: a glass container (made of silica glass) and a closure (made of glass, metal, cork, or plastic). The closure material depends on the type of foodstuff.

Topics include: Glass packaging materials, glass properties and manufacture, glass surface treatment, closures and defects in glass containers.
