The complex pattern of how energy flows from organism to organism through an ecosystem is called a food web. Plants are called producers because they produce their own food using the energy of the sun. Other organisms that cannot produce their own food are called consumers because they rely on eating plants or other animals in order to achieve their energy requirements. The arrows in a food chain or food web go in the direction of the energy flow or, rather, to the organism that is doing the eating.
