The Berlin Wall, constructed in 1961, divided capitalist West Germany from impoverished communist East Germany and was a visible symbol of the Cold War. During the three decades that the wall stood, more than 100 people were killed by East German guards as they tried to escape from East Germany. In June 1987, President Ronald Reagan visited Berlin and urged Mikhail Gorbachev, the USSR leader, “If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
