On the evening of March 5, 1770 in Boston, a crowd of American workmen began throwing snowballs and rocks at British soldiers. A shot rang out, and then several soldiers fired their weapons, resulting in the deaths of five civilians. This event became known as the Boston Massacre.
The following figure shows an engraving by Paul Revere produced three weeks later, titled The Bloody Massacre Perpetrated in King-Street.

The engraving depicts an orderly line of smiling British soldiers firing calmly into a peaceful, unarmed American crowd. It is considered one of the most effective pieces of war propaganda in American history.
