The United States trades with many countries. When the U.S. sells goods and services to other countries, the value of the goods is recorded as exports. When the U.S. buys goods and services from other countries, the value of those goods is recorded as imports. The trade balance is the value of each country’s total exports to the United States minus the value of each country’s total imports from the United States. A negative trade balance is called a trade deficit.

This table shows the value of the exports, imports, and trade balances for the top five largest trade partners of the United States in 2015. Values are given in billions of dollars    .
