Transgenic organisms are organisms or cells that have had their DNA altered by the introduction of foreign DNA sequences from another species. This process is different from selective breeding, which involves selecting plants or animals with desired traits and breeding them. 

Genetic engineering involves:
Identifying the genetic information that gives an organism a desired trait
Copying that information from the organism that has the trait
Inserting that information into the DNA of another organism
Growing the new organism 

Transgenic organisms are generated in the laboratory for research purposes. 
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants, animals, or bacteria that have had their DNA changed using genes from other plants or animals. Some examples of GMOs include: Cotton, Corn, Soybeans.
