To fully understand the interaction among characters, it is important for the students to be able to compare and contrast characters. Simple similarities and differences should be expected. In first grade, the students will need to identify the adventures and experiences among the characters. Fictional stories with many events would help with this skill.
Story 1 - Cave
The girls walk into the cave. Mary likes caves, but Sally does not. She is scared of the dark. Mary wants to go further into the cave. Sally thinks. She says that she will wait. Sally waits at the front of the cave. Sally picks up bugs and looks at them.
Mary goes into the cave. She hears noises and looks around. The cave gets darker. Mary yells. Then she hears her voice again. A bat flies by. Mary covers her head. She screams and runs out of the cave. Story 2 - Lost in the Store Billy and his mother are shopping. They take a cart. Billy looks around at the food. He finds a box of cereal. He looks at it. Then he looks around. His mother is not there. He looks around the store. He can’t find her. Billy’s mother can’t find Billy. She calls his name and looks around the store. She starts to get scared. Then she asks a woman. This woman works at the store. She goes to the front of the store. She gets on the speaker and calls for Billy. Billy hears his name. He runs to the front of the store and sees his mother. He gives her a big hug. He is safe.
