First graders need to practice their listening skills during the year with specific activities. Some of these activities can include listening to a story read aloud and a speaker addressing the class. The students need to identify key details from the message or story. This is similar to reading a story, but they must use a different method of obtaining the information.

Story 1 - Bands

A band is a group of people. These people may play musical instruments. These musical instruments can be a flute, drums, or a horn. There are many other musical instruments too. Each person plays their instrument at the same time. The band members will read sheet music. This sheet has notes on it. The band will read each line on the sheet. Then they will play their instrument.

A singer is another member of the band. A singer will sing a song with the band. The band will play at the same time.

Story 2 - Books

Books are groups of pages. The pages are glued together. A person reads each page. Then she will turn the page. She will read the next page.

Some books are stories. Some stories are not true. Some stories are true. Other books have pictures in them. Those books may have lots of colors in them. Books for a child may be small. Other books may be big.
