It is important for all students to read for pleasure. This allows them to read fun books. Second graders should also be reading about history and science in their free time. This will help when they start reading textbooks.

Read a text about a historical or scientific topic below and answer questions about it:

George Washington was the first president of the United States. In 1789, he became the president. Washington did not go to school. He worked on the farm. Later, he was taught math and reading. Washington’s father died when George was eleven years old.

In 1755, George Washington led the army during a war. During the French and Indian War, George was shot four times. He lived. For many years, George would work for the army. In 1758, George stopped working for the army. He went back to farming.

In 1763, George grew angry with Britain. The British were making the colonists pay taxes. Leaders met in Philadelphia and George came. He wanted to go back to war with Great Britain. Then he became the Major General of the army. After fighting the Revolutionary War, George Washington became the president of the United States.
