Many texts or pieces of writing can be divided into different sections. Poems are divided into stanzas and books are divided into chapters. Dramas or plays are divided into acts. These sections build on each other.

Read the poem and answer questions about how each stanza of the poem builds on different stanzas:

We walked into the shelter for dogs
Barks came from all around
We stopped and looked in the cages
And at the ground

There were lots of different kinds
Each of a different breed
Ready to adopt
And ready to be freed

One dog caught my eye
He looked at me with love
I walked over to his cage
And read his tag above

Scruffy is my name
And I like to play a lot”
That is all I needed to know
About my new friend that I got

I adopted little Scruffy
And play with him all the time
I know I made the right choice
For this friend to be all mine
