Subtraction is taking away a number from another number. Addition and subtraction are important skills. You've got to be able to check that you've been given the right change.

Addition problems use the plus sign + (for adding) and subtraction problems use the minus sign - (for taking away) when they are written down. The plus sign denotes that one or more numbers should be added to others to get a larger amount, for example 5 + 5 = 10.  The minus sign means that one or more numbers should be taken away, for example 8 - 4 = 4.

There are several techniques that we can use to simplify math problems and make them easier, such as counting in steps, rounding numbers up or down, or using number bonds.
