Recording ideas may take many forms - from quick and simple sketches 'in the field', to photographed images and perhaps even a collection of ideas and ephemera which inspires and consolidates ideas for a particular project.

An initial concept or idea for a project usually begins with the question 'What do I want to create?' This question may lead to the artist exploring many different possibilities and cause them to experience and experiment with many different media, stimuli and processes. Recording the outcomes of these experiences and experiments will underpin a project, as a selection may end up being woven into the finished artwork.

Ideas can be recorded in sketchbooks, binders or folders and may consist of images, notes, scraps of texture, cuttings and sketches. An organized artist knows when and where the inspiration was sourced and can access ideas with ease.
