A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word but has a totally different spelling, as well as a different meaning.

An example of two homophones would be grate and great.

Grate - This word refers to shredding such as in grating cheese and/or raspy such as in a grating voice.

Great - This word means large in size or quantity.

'Carrot' and 'Caret' are good examples of homophones - see how much different they are spelled compared to how they are pronounced.

'Bare' and 'Bear' sound exactly the same when spoken, however they mean very different things. Homophones are handy when it comes to creative writing.

'Right' and 'Write' have the same pronunciation but mean different things.
