To measure volume you need three points of references to be multiplied because you are measuring a 3 dimensional area.  In other words, you need to multiply the length by the width by the depth. The measurement of the volume has a formula to follow, i.e., V = LWH.  1 cubic foot (1ft.3) contained 1,728 cubic inches (1,728in.3).

Remember is that a standard yard that was equal to 3 feet is not the same thing as a cubic yard.  The 3 feet equals 1 yard is a 2 dimensional surface area measurement.  A cubic yard is the measurement of a 3 dimensional area.  In cubic measurements, there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard.  So how do you convert cubic feet into cubic yards?  You take the number of feet and divide it by 27.
