You will notice that the symbol for some elements is very different from the English name of the element. This is because the symbol uses either the Latin form of the word or because the element itself was once known by a different name and the original name is where the symbol was taken from. For example, lead is derived from Plumbum, hence Pb. And gold is derived from Aurium, hence Au.
