Site remediation is the process of detecting, investigating, and assessing suspected contaminated sites. It also involves reversing negative soil changes, removing pollution, and taking follow-up measures.

The process of site remediation typically has three phases:
Initial assessment:
Also called a preliminary assessment and site investigation
Remedial investigation: Studies the site to determine the full extent of the contamination
Construction: The physical remediation phase

The purpose of a remedial investigation is to gather data to characterize the site. This includes:
Field investigations
Treatability studies
Baseline risk assessment
Characterizing the nature of the hazardous substances
Identifying characteristics of air, surface water, and groundwater
