Thermal Processes topics include: Thermal treatment, combustion technologies and energy recovery.

Thermal treatment is a waste management process that uses heat to clean garbage. The goal is to convert waste into a stable, usable end product, while reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of in landfills.

Thermal treatment processes include:

Incineration: The combustion of hazardous materials at high temperatures to destroy contaminants. Incineration is done in an incinerator, a type of furnace that burns hazardous materials in a combustion chamber. Industrial plants for waste incineration are often called waste-to-energy facilities.

Pyrolysis: The thermal degradation of plastic waste in the absence of oxygen. The process breaks down the waste into gas, oil, and a solid residue called char. Pyrolysis can process materials like scrap tires and plastic that are hard to incinerate. The temperature for the pyrolysis process generally ranges between 300–700 °C.

Thermal methods for waste management aim to:
Reduce waste volume
Convert waste into harmless materials
Utilize the energy hidden within waste as heat, steam, electrical power, or combustible material
