IC Engine Practice Test: Engine Electronics — Flashcards

Engine Electronics topics include: Engine management systems, measurement of pressure and temperature, position displacement and air flow measurement.

Here are some basics of engine electronics:
Electronic control unit (ECU):
This computer-controlled system is often called the "brain" of the engine. It controls the fuel injection rate, the timing of the spark, and other functions. The ECU uses sensors to monitor the engine's speed, load, and other parameters. It then alters the fuel injection rate to provide the right power.
Mixed signal circuits: These circuits have both linear and non-linear components. They consist of analog circuitry and microprocessors to process input.

Some basic electronic components include:
Resistors:
Limit the flow of electrons and reduce current or voltage
Diodes: Allow electric current to flow in only one direction
Transistors: Switch electric currents on and off or amplify them
Opto-electronic components: Turn light into electricity or vice-versa
Basic principles of electronics: These include resistance, current, voltage, and power.
Car electrical system: Circuits are opened and closed by switches or relays. Some components in a car's electrical system only work if the electricity flows in the correct direction. Most cars use a negative earth system.
Ancillary circuits: These circuits have fuses to prevent accidental short circuits. The most common type of fuse is a short length of thin wire enclosed in a heatproof casing.
