Here are some types of dams:
Arch dams: These dams are thinner than other dams and are best suited for narrow canyons and gorges to support the structure's stresses.
Gravity dams: These are the most common type of dam and require little maintenance. They are made of both masonry and concrete, with concrete being more common today. Gravity dams are the most permanent type of dam and can be very high if they have good foundations.
Buttress dams: These are a specific type of gravity dam where the large mass of concrete is reduced, and the forces are diverted to the dam foundation through vertical or sloping buttresses.
Cofferdams: These are temporary dams built to exclude water and soil from specific areas. They are built to permit damming, diversion or dewatering and construction of a permanent structure in a dry area.
Overflow dams: These dams block flow in a stream to harness the water for generating power or to improve navigation and provide irrigation water.
Storage dams: These are the most common type of dam and collect water during the rainy season for use in the dry season, to control floods, and for irrigation.
Earth dams: These are the most common types of dams and are built using the locally available soils and gravels. They are suitable for moderate heights. 

Dams are of two general types: overflow dams, and non-overflow dams. Overflow dams block flow in a stream to harness the water for generating power or to improve navigation and provide irrigation water. Non-overflow dams store water for drinking water supply, irrigation, or power.
Other types of dams include: Gravity dam, Embankment dam, Overflow dam, Storage dam, Earth dams.
