Tank irrigation is a surface irrigation method that uses tanks, sluices, and channels to direct water to crops. Tanks are small reservoirs that have been used for irrigation in India since ancient times.

There are two types of tanks:
System tanks:
Receive water from nearby streams or reservoirs and runoff from their catchment.
Non-system tanks: Depend on rainfall and are not connected to a river system.

Tank irrigation is a storage irrigation method, while river canal irrigation is a direct irrigation method.
