The Romans invaded and settled in Great Britain almost two thousand years ago, making the Celtic tribes who lived here a part of their vast Empire. The Ancient Romans referred to Britain as Britannia. But life in Britain got better for some of the people under Roman rule. The invaders introduced new developments to the country in agriculture, urbanisation, industry and architecture. There are still many Roman roads throughout the land today. They also brought with them many aspects of their culture such as their language and their religion. One of the main advantages of being a part of the Roman Empire was the defence it offered from other invaders like the Anglo-Saxons.
