Electrician licensing in the USA is mandated at the state or local level, typically requiring a combination of formal education, thousands of hours of supervised on-the-job training (apprenticeship), and passing a licensing exam based on the National Electrical Code (NEC). Licenses generally progress from apprentice to journeyman, and finally to master electrician or contractor.

Levels of Licensing:
Apprentice: Registered with the state, works under a journeyman/master.
Journeyman: Licensed to work independently but not own a business.
Master/Contractor: Licensed to design, install, and pull permits for projects.
Requirements: Generally 4+ years (approx. 8,000 hours) of experience, plus classroom instruction.
