Lipid metabolism is the process of breaking down and storing fats for energy, and synthesizing structural and functional lipids. 

Here are some lipid metabolic pathways:
Lipolysis:
Triglyceride breakdown
Fatty acid oxidation: Also known as beta-oxidation, this is the process of breaking down a fatty acid into acetyl-CoA units
De novo lipogenesis: Fatty acid and triglyceride synthesis
Ketogenesis: Ketone body synthesis
**Cholesterol synthesis
 
Fatty acids are a major fuel source for cellular activity and are the backbone for cell membrane phospholipids and glycolipids. 
Ketone bodies are small lipid-derived molecules that serve as a circulating energy source for tissues in times of fasting or prolonged exercise. The liver produces three types of ketone bodies: acetoacetate, acetate, and β-hydroxybutyrate.
