A brake is a mechanical device that absorbs and dissipates mechanical energy as heat. It's used to stop or slow down the motion of a rotating object. A dynamometer is a device that measures mechanical power. 

Here are some types of dynamometers:
Prony brake:
One of the earliest dynamometers, the Prony brake dynamometer has been used for over 200 years to measure engine horsepower.
Rope brake dynamometer: A rope is wound around a drum attached to the output shaft. One side of the rope is connected to a spring balance, and the other side is attached to a loading device.
Hydraulic dynamometer: Acts as a water brake, using fluid friction to dissipate input energy and measure input torque or power.
Eddy current dynamometer: A subset of chassis dynamometers, eddy current dynamometers can act as brake dynamometers. They can also provide a quick load change rate as well as steady state and controlled acceleration.
