The difference between longitudinal and transverse vibrations is the direction in which the waves shake. 

In a longitudinal wave, the particles move parallel to the wave direction. In a transverse wave, the particles move perpendicular to the wave direction. 
Longitudinal waves are also known as compression waves. 

Examples of transverse waves include:
Vibrations on a string
Ripples on the surface of water 

In a wave, the material on which the wave is traveling is moving. However, the material itself does not move along with the wave.
