In math, an average is a single value that represents a set of data. A mean is a numeric value that represents the center of a set of numbers.
An average is calculated by adding all the numbers in a set of data and dividing by the total number of values. The arithmetic mean is the most typical average for a list of numbers.

A mean is calculated by adding all the numbers in a set of data and dividing by the total number of data points in the set. A mean is a point in a data set that is the average of all the data points in the set.
There are three main types of average: mean, median, and mode. Each of these techniques works slightly differently and often results in slightly different typical values.
The average is best used to aggregate measurements that have a relatively even distribution. The 50th percentile, or median, is good for seeing long-term trends because it's a stable measurement.
