Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a psychedelic drug and powerful hallucinogen that was first synthesized in 1938 from ergotamine, a chemical derived from a grain fungus that often grows on rye. The chemical structure of LSD is shown in Figure 1, with its three nitrogen atoms numbered 1−3 and with carbon 8 labeled C-8.
