Industrial Microbiology topics include: Microorganisms, industry, industrial uses of bacteria, molds and yeasts

Industrial microbiology is a branch of applied microbiology that uses microorganisms to create industrial products. It has applications in many industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and environmental management.

Industrial microbiology uses fermentation, which is the biotransformation of food matrices by microbes or their enzymes. This process can occur spontaneously or through the introduction of starter material.

Industrial microbiology has many applications, including:
Food production:
Microorganisms are used to produce fermented foods like cheese, yogurt, bread, wine, and beer.
Enzyme production: Microorganisms are used to produce industrial enzymes through safe gene transfer methods. The first industrially produced microbial enzymes were obtained from fungal amylase in 1896.
Yeast: Yeast is a single-cell microorganism that is used as a source of high nutritional value proteins, enzymes, and vitamins. It also has applications in the health food industry as a flavoring agent, food additive, and conditioner.

Industrial microbiologists develop assays to detect microbial contaminants in food and develop preservatives. They also evaluate natural or synthetic agents for the prevention of disease, deterioration, or spoilage.
