Gene expression is the process of turning genetic information into a function. It involves two major steps: transcription and translation. 

Transcription is the DNA-directed synthesis of RNA. During transcription, the information stored in a gene's DNA is passed to a similar molecule called RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the cell nucleus. 
Translation is the conversion of genetic codes from the DNA code into a protein. 
Gene expression is vital for maintaining normal cellular structure and function. It is also the basis for developmental changes, such as differentiation and morphogenesis. 
The physical expression of a gene is called the phenotype.
