The NATE (North American Technician Excellence) Core Exam is the foundation for all NATE certifications and tests a technician's fundamental knowledge of HVACR systems. It is a 50-question, closed-book exam that covers safety, tools, basic construction, science, and electrical principles.

1. Safety
Job Site Safety: OSHA standards, personal protective equipment (PPE), hazard recognition, and mitigation.
Safe Procedures: Proper handling of refrigerants, lockout/tagout procedures, and ladder safety. 

2. Tools and Equipment 
Proper Usage: Correct application of tools for installation and service.
Maintenance & Calibration: Proper care, maintenance, and calibration of instruments.
Tool Types: Use of screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, saw, drills, and bending tools. 

3. Basic Construction 
Structure: Understanding of building construction as it relates to HVAC equipment placement.
Measurements: Reading blueprints, basic geometry (rectangles, triangles), and using tape measures/levels. 

4. Basic Science
Heat Transfer: Principles of heat transfer, including conduction, convection, and radiation.
Refrigeration Cycle: Understanding the vapor compression cycle, components (compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion devices), and pressure-temperature relationships.
Temperature & Humidity: Measuring dry-bulb, wet-bulb, and dew point. 

5. Electrical Fundamentals
Theory: Ohm's Law (Voltage, Current, Resistance), power, and circuits (series and parallel).
Components: Capacitors, motors, and wiring diagrams.
Tools: Using multimeters and testers. 

6. Achieving Desired Conditions
System Components: Knowledge of furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers, and ductwork.
Airflow: Basic airflow calculations and principles.
Controls: Thermostats and limit controls. 

Exam Structure
Total Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions.
Time Limit: 1.5 hours.
Format: Closed-book. 

Technicians typically take this exam alongside a Specialty Exam (e.g., Gas Heating, Air Conditioning) to achieve full certification.
