The NATE Core Essentials exam is the mandatory foundational test for all North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certifications, validating entry-level knowledge in HVACR safety, tools, electricity, and science. It consists of 50 questions, with a 70% passing score required to proceed to specialty certifications. 

Key Exam Details
Format:
50 multiple-choice questions, proctored (in-person or online).
Requirements: Passing this core exam is required before taking any of the specialty exams (e.g., Heat Pump, Gas Heating).

Core Knowledge Areas (KATEs):
Safety:
Regulations, refrigerant handling, and PPE.
Tools: Proper use of service tools, gauges, and meters.
Electrical Fundamentals: Circuits, voltage, and components.
Science & Comfort: Principles of heat transfer, air properties, and temperature/humidity measurements.
Construction: Basic knowledge of building structures.

Validity: Once passed, the Core exam does not need to be retaken, provided the specialty certifications are kept active, notes this source.
Pathways: It is part of the "Traditional Pathway" (Core + Specialty) or can be combined with the new CHP-5 pathway.
