Fire alarm systems use initiating devices (detect a fire condition) and notification appliances (alert occupants). Initiating devices include smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations, waterflow switches, and supervisory switches. Notification appliances (on NACs) include horns, strobes, speakers, and combination units. The control unit monitors inputs, processes logic, and activates outputs.

Worked example(s)
Example:
A sprinkler waterflow switch initiates an alarm when water is flowing (sprinkler activation). A valve supervisory switch signals trouble/supervisory when a control valve is closed or not in the normal position.
