Plumbing vents are crucial vertical pipes extending to the roof that regulate air pressure in drain lines, allowing sewage gases to escape and preventing trap siphonage. They facilitate smooth water drainage by replacing air, preventing airlocks. Key components include common vents for multiple fixtures and roof-level vent stacks, ensuring safety and efficiency. 

Key Functions of Plumbing Vents:
Preventing Sewer Gases: Vents prevent hazardous odors and methane gas from entering the home by maintaining a water seal in traps.
Facilitating Drainage: When water passes through pipes, it creates a vacuum; vents supply air to neutralize this pressure, preventing slow drains or gurgling sounds.
Protecting Traps: Without proper venting, traps (like those under sinks) can lose their water seal, allowing sewer gas into the home. 

Common Vent System Components & Practices:
Roof Vent: Usually, pipes run up through the roof to exhaust gases.
Common Vent: A single pipe serving two fixtures (e.g., back-to-back sinks) to save on labor and materials, often required to be on the same floor level.
Pipe Materials: Common materials include PVC and ABS for vent pipes.
Common Violations: Incorrectly installing multiple traps on the same trap arm or improper sizing of pipes.
